Nepal President Vidya Devi Bhandari has invited CPN(UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli to form a new government in the Himalayan nation.

The move comes after Mr Oli staked the claim to form a new government today. Earlier in the day, the incumbent Sher Bahadur Deuba resigned as Prime Minister.

Addressing the nation on television, Mr Deuba said he is submitting his resignation to pave the way for the formation of a new government as per the people’s mandate in recent elections.

The Left Alliance of CPN (UML) and CPN (Maoist Center) registered a victory in the historic parliament and first ever provincial assembly election held on November 26 and December 7 last year.

In 275 member House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament, Left Alliance secured an almost two-thirds majority by winning 174 seats. The ruling Nepali Congress got just 63 seats.
